I tried your xrandr commands:

xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --scale 2x2 ==> very small windows
xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --scale 1.5x1.5 ==> not so small windows

xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --scale 1.0x1.0 ==> back to normal
