This program is readily available in the Ubuntu repos and replaces Ubuntu's own Sound Settings. Look for "pavucontrol" in Synaptic or Software Centre. After installation, it's in your applications as "PulseAudio Volume Control". It does everything the Sound Settings do and works like a charm.
