Wow, I am amazed you tracked this down. I've been seeing this bug for the last week since I've been using sshfs and it's been driving me crazy. Thanks so much for outlining the steps to reproduce. I can now avoid by removing the gnome system monitor applet :)

Hopefully this will get fixed upstream.
