I'm seeing this also on Ubuntu 7.04 using a local vfat mount...

# mount | grep work
/dev/hda3 on /work type vfat (rw,sync,utf8,umask=007,gid=46,uid=1000)

Gedit version is 2.18.1-0ubuntu1.
