I have this exact issue. It is completely reproducible in that any time the GDM login screen is present (regardless of fresh boot, return from suspend, switching users, etc...) there is no mouse pointer. As has been noted, the mouse actually seems to be working, there's just no visible indicator.
I sometimes get the brief X cursor as crom notes just as GDM goes away -- not sure if this is true every single time.
I have nvidia 7150M if that matters...
