I have the same problem, my system under feisty was running beryl with an nvidia driver and had a the four-sided cube and other effects. After upgrading to gutsy I can only login if I choose the failsafe-gnome every time, otherwise I get the following in ~/.xsession-errors:

(process:25692): Gtk-WARNING **: This process is currently running setuid or setgid.
This is not a supported use of GTK+. You must create a helper

    http://www.gtk.org/setuid.html
