i tried xgl with xfce but i ended in the same situation as above..

btw, i have fglrx drivers. my glxinfo hangs FIRST TIME .. for that matter, first time usage of glxinfo/fglrxinfo/xgl hangs.. after which things go fine..

wen glxinfo hangs, system usage peaks..!!.. the bug may/may not be in gdm but rather to do something with the glx stuff.. i put up a start-xgl-xfce4.sh script like startx , where i did

glxinfo &
pkill glxinfo

<rest of stuff>

the script worked though it crashed :(, due to some esoteric problems b/w xfce,xgl and X display ...
