Similar happened to me in Windows XP, with OpenOffice writer font menu showing:
Normal
cursiva
Negreta
Negreta cursiva
instead of the usual Italic, Bold, etc.
The fix was in Regional and Language Options / Advanced / Language for non-Unicode Programs
It had been changed to Spanish (possibly when I was in Mexico last month). Changed it back to English, reboot, and voila! all normal again.
