David - I can reproduce your results on official vs pango-disabled dapper. I get times of around 2-5 seconds for official, and 7-10 seconds for dapper with pango disabled. Just for fun, Epiphany gets around 10-12. If I have time tomorrow, I might try rebuilding the dapper package with various options to see if I can pinpoint the problem.
