A possible workaround is:

rm /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
touch /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
chmod a-w /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache

This file together with the fact that desktops/distributions don't respect the freedesktop standards seems to cause more harm than good anyway.
