Hi guys. I know nothing about your future GIO implementation but I hope it will support feature as in next example:

$ xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/xmpp
psi-plus.desktop

and about default applications. for some reason FF does not read neither ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list nor /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache on my system (gentoo gnome3). So I always choose applications manually for each new mime. moreover FF does not remember my previous choice and may suggest wrong app (looks like it just doesn't try to guess mime and chooses last selected app for any file).
xdg-open works fine though.
I checked XDG_* vars and they are correct

I love FF but chromium works much better in this regard.
