Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I installed ubuntu 9.04 in French on my computer.
When i wanted to upgrade firefox to 3.5 version, using Synaptic, the only version I've able to install is a US-only version, on which it is impossible to install any localized language pack (ie langpackXX.xpi file).
I do not understand as when i go to mozilla.org site, it says me I should download and install the French version.
Why Ubuntu is not able to just do that ?

Regards,
Olivier

WORKAROUND (MEDIUM RISK):
for the current release u can just use the xpi from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.5/linux-i686/xpi/
NOTE: This might cause support issues later on if you forget to uninstall the upstream xpi before upgrading to Karmic. You will be stuck with an old language pack in your profile.

Status changed to wishlist ???

Do you mean not being able to use the package in your native language is just a wish ?
Remember Most people around the world do not speak English !

Just 2 points :
- Mozilla delivers Firefox 3.5 with localization, so why not with Ubuntu 9.04, why Jaunty users should wait for Karmic release to get their local language ?
- there is a work around provided in Bug #370863, why it is not suggested here, as #370863 is said to be a duplicated of this one ?

My apologies. You are correct that this is very important. I have changed the status to High, but that will not speed up the production of the language packs. Firefox 3.5 in Jaunty was a preview release. There was still a lot of work to make it fully integrated into Ubuntu as the blueprint that this bug is linked to will show. If you would like the language packs in Jaunty, please click the Nominate For Release button and select Jaunty. As for the workaround, I don't know if we advise using Mozilla Language Packs directly in Ubuntu. I will look into it.

this is fixed in karmic now. we have issues with some country codes, but those don't belong in this bug.

We've tried an install from the French (Canada) locale, and it still appears to be an issue. Firefox ends up staying in english, even through language-pack-fr and language-support-fr are installed.
