For me, installing fonts-cantarell is a *temporary* fix, i.e. it only works until the next login.
Then, I have to reinstall the package (i.e. using --reinstall) to fix, once again.
It is just a temporar workaround, just like using the "Universal Access" was.
OTOH, the top ("Activities") bar in Gnome Shell is very strange, it has horizontal white stripes on it, thus making it almost unreadable, but I could bear that.
