Probably because of this, documented in the alpha-2 technical overview:

  AMD's proprietary graphics driver (fglrx):

    * AMD's proprietary driver doesn't support Ubuntu Lucid's xserver yet. Please use the open source driver (-ati) instead.

affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) → fglrx-installer (Ubuntu)

Is there any word on whether an update to fglrx-installer will be available in time for Lucid?

Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Changed in fglrx-installer (Ubuntu Lucid):
status: New → Confirmed

Alberto indicated that there will be a new release of the ATI driver RSN which works with lucid.

Maybe I'm too much of a newbie of infrequent user to use the workaround, but it seems like a catch-22: 3 broken packages related to this ATI driver, fglrx. Trying to fix them in synaptic produced an error:

Unpacking fglrx (from .../fglrx_2%3a8.721-0ubuntu7_i386.deb) ...
dpkg-divert: mismatch on package
when removing `diversion of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so to /usr/lib/fglrx/libdri.so.xlibmesa by fglrx'
  found `diversion of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so to /usr/lib/fglrx/libdri.so.xlibmesa by xorg-driver-fglrx'
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%3a8.721-0ubuntu7_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx_2%3a8.721-0ubuntu7_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So nothing can be updated or upgraded until the broken packages are fixed, but they also can't be fixed (and this so close to the final release!)

I got past the diversion issues with the following commands:

apt-get purge xorg-driver-fglrx
dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/fglrx/libdri.so.xlibmesa
dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so
dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
apt-get install fglrx
