Bug Description

Binary package hint: f-spot

Just upgraded to hardy from the previous LTS release and found that it is no longer possible to print to a small 6"x4" paper in f-spot. F-Spot does not give a paper size option in its print dialog and I have tried changing the printing size in the Printing administration applet but the size is not honoured. When I print to a 6x4 sheet, even with the latter setting, the photo prints at a large size and is cropped (only one corner of the page is visible on the printout).

This is a very annoying regression since this PC belongs to my mother, who uses the PC entirely for printing photos! (Needless to say, Intrepid is not an option here.)

$ apt-cache policy f-spot
f-spot:
  Installed: 0.4.3.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.4.3.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.4.3.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.4.2-1ubuntu3 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

My printer is a Canon Pixma MP180, using proprietary turboprint drivers but F-Spot is missing the paper size option in the print dialog no matter what printer I attach.

The version in intrepid does allow the target paper size to be changed via a tab in the print dialog, but this setting is not honoured when I print. Changing the printing size in the printing admin applet does work in intrepid only. Still, I'd like to keep this PC running an LTS release if at all possible.

I also can't get anything to print correctly from F-Spot.

I just brought home an HP Photosmart C3180. I have tried all option combinations I can imagine under F-Spot and the print config dialog and I get the exact behaviour you describe above. The printer first refuses to print because it doesn't believe the paper is the correct size. When I override this warning I get a corner printed with the rest of the image cropped off. It's as if the image hasn't been scaled down to fit.

I have successfully printed using the HPLIP gui tool although this has scaled keeping the aspect ratio correct and this has resulted in white margins top and bottom. I intend to see if I can resolve this but even if I can using the HPLIP tool is a pretty horrible workaround for printing photos.

This is using Hardy, I haven't tested Intrepid but the post above suggests that won't help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

I've now upgraded to Intrepid where it is possible to print to a smaller size sheet. However, the process is clunky. The PC in question belongs to my mum and it's too complicated for her to use (and hence broken as far as she's concerned). To justify my comment, printing to a 6x4 piece of photo paper in photo quality mode (an obvious thing to want to do in a photo program!) requires many steps that have to be done in order before every print (or at least once per session):
 - Go to Photo menu (unfamiliar, when every other program my mum's ever used calls this menu "File").
 - Select "Page setup"
 - Select the specific printer.
 - Select the paper size. <- missing this step results in printing an A4 page onto 6x4! Why can't it just do the right thing??
 - Click Apply.
 - Select the photos you want to print.
 - Go to the Photo menu.
 - Select print.
 - Select the specific printer.
 - Select advanced tab.
 - Select print quality.
 - Select page setup tab.
 - Select paper type.
For my mum, selecting the papersize and quality isn't easy, but having to select the papersize and printer twice in two separate dialog boxes is terrible.

I think for photo printing a wizard approach would be a lot easier. Why not ask just a few questions like
 - Which printer would you like to use?
 - What size of paper? (with a list including all common sizes)
 - What quality?
 - How many photos per sheet? (with thumbnail previews to click on)
