The ~/.xsession-errors file from the session when it hangs would be interessting. Maybe it gives a clue about the hang.

I wonder if maybe when update-manager hanged a "apport" window was on the same screen that was blocking the input of update-manager? You don't happen to have a bigger photo of the screen with the taskbar ?
