Removing gnome-orca *and* at-spi did the trick for me. Emacs now starts with:

$ emacs
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "atk-bridge": libatk-bridge.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

... but everything works fine from this point on.
