Thanks. That'd indeed solve 90% of my woes.

So, what's left is as far as I can see:

 - ./ec2-init should not overwrite existing host keys, to avoid accidentally changing them if you install the package on a server
 - W: ec2-init: copyright-refers-to-versionless-license-file usr/share/common-licenses/GPL

This should be quite easy to fix.
