I was wrong on #18. I do not actually have any old jaunty menu entries left, but I have 2.6.30-020630-generic which I installed for intel drivers on jaunty. I just forgot about it and didn't look hard enough last night.

Anyway this kernel/initrd is able to detect the crypto partition correctly. I don't know why..
