I am very doubtful that this is a graphics driver issue. This seems to be more related to changes to the UNR code to calculate icon spacing and window sizes. That is why this issue is difficult to find because it requires very specific set of circumstances to reproduce. Simply changing the number of icons in the menu can sometimes fix this.
So far, on my EeePC 1000, I have yet to encounter this issue, although I did notice some minor spacing mistakes for early versions of Karmic. I have had no issues with the alpha versions of Lucid.
