This bug is not solved at all. After having hit it (xubuntu 21.10, Chromium 96.0.4664.45, snap 2.53.2, I still can not open .vmrc URLs.
When looking at the master git repo here :

one read that the whitelisted allowedURL schemes are still hard-coded.

Seriously?
