I can also confirm this issue, not sure if libcairo is truly to blame, but this slowness was the first thing I noticed on my freshly installed 10.10 beta (fully updated).
Quickly scrolling through lines of text in gnome-terminal is enough to cause X to completely consume 1 core on my Q6600 and the perceived user experience is really bad.
