@tmolloy, thank you for circling back around. I'm glad the patches worked for you :-)
Note that there are other (unrelated) packages in @waveform's PPA that may get installed with an apt upgrade. I don't know what the state of those packages are. I disabled the PPA after installing bluez, just to be sure I didn't unintentionally install the other packages.
