Attempted a reinstallation/cloning of precise as follows:
$ dpkg --get-selections | fgrep -c :i386
237
$ dpkg --get-selections > selections.txt
$ sftp clonehost # ...

$ sudo dpkg --set-selections < selections.txt
$ sudo apt-get -y update
$ sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade

Ended up with bunch of errors and:
$ dpkg -l | fgrep -c :i386
507
