It sounds like there could be support for the W3C push API in the future. This would have a much better chance of getting email servers to support push notifications. This would allow push notifications to be supported cross platform, including both mobile devices and desktop browsers.

It looks like Fastmail already support the W3C API, as I am able to subscribe to notifications in Firefox.
