Bug Description

When changing language between English (United States) and Spanish (Mex.), if I choose to change the names of directories, such as Desktop -> Escritorio, the Desktop folder in the previous language remains with all of its files after the change, while the Desktop folder in the new language is created, but is empty.

Steps to reproduce in Lucid Beta1 Netbook Edition Live USB (persistent).
1) Boot the live session, select English and "Try Ubuntu"
2) Reboot the system
3) Select Italian (or another language).
4) A window come up asking about changing folder names automatically.
5) Select Yes.

What it should happen:
* Folders should be correctly renamed.

What happens instead:
* In File & Folders
Document, Music, Pictures, Videos folders are correctly renamed.
There are both Downloads and Scaricati (italian name) folders present.
There is a Desktop folder instead of a Scrivania (italian name) one and it contains the Example folder and "Install Ubuntu etc." icon.

* In Ubuntu folder:
All folder are correctly renamed but there are both Desktop and Scrivania (italian translation) in it.
The Desktop folder contains the Example folder and "Install Ubuntu etc.", Scrivania folder is empty.

Maybe this is not a bug, but a feature.
I could not find the upstream project bug tracker.
I have send an email to Alexander Larsson asking for his opinion on this bug.

Perhaps this is just an misunderstanding with the Spanish translation, then. The Spanish notification uses the verb eliminarse instead of moverse or trasladarse, which might be more accurate. Someone with more experience using Spanish on computers should probably confirm this; maybe this is an idiomatic usage of eliminarse that I'm not familiar with.

The English is pretty clear as to what it's supposed to do, but I read the Spanish first; hence the confusion.

The freedesktop bugtracker is at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/, although
I don't know if xdg-user-dirs uses it.

Rather than contacting the maintainer directly, it might be worth asking
at the freedesktop mailing list at
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/xdg

I have assigned this bug to Ubuntu Spanish Translators to ask them for help.

I think xdg-user-dirs-gtk is a different project from xdg-user-dirs. xdg-user-dirs-gtk is hosted in GNOME.

I think it will be better if the program ask whether the user what to
update the existing settings, too. To be honest, I ignored the text
Adi just mentioned time to time...

Yeah, there seem to be none. I guess we should add one.

This is intentionally not done, due to the large risks involved with
automatically moving users files. There can be errors (conflicts, i/o
errors, etc) and there may be cases where the move didn't do exactly
what the user expected.

However, I know it was discussed that we should at least bring up a
dialog that describes the migration a bit more in details (what folders
got moved where) to help the users handle the migration better.
