Good morning
I have a pc with 3 ssd and on the first and second ssd I installed ubuntu mate 23.04 and on the third I put debian sid
I have updated ubuntu mate 23.04 and on both of them (since a couple of days)I get the following.
On machine 1 the desktop (displaying folders and files) shuts down if I try to do operations and on machine 2 it doesn't start at all (I only have the empty desktop with no icons or folders. On machine 2 I reset caja with the following system

dconf reset -f /org/mate/caja/
dconf reset -f /org/mate/caja-open-terminal/
dconf reset -f /org/mate/desktop/background/
rm -rf ~/.config/caja ~/.gtk-bookmarks ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
killall caja
without getting any results.
on both if sudo caja works fine
this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/w5ob1g2y8znebyl/simplescreenrecorder-2023-03-20_13.49.17.mkv?dl=0 shows what the cursor does on machine 2
If you need further proof or testing I am at your disposal
Thanks

This is true for both the 23.04 beta and the 23.04 daily of 4-1-23. This makes Mate completely unusable, of course.

I have tried this on three completely different machines: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G, Intel Celeron N3050, Intel Celeron N4120, with same results.

good morning
error is also present on the new installation done with the iso downloaded today 2023-04-02 from https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/current/lunar-desktop-amd64.iso.
Just got to the desktop after installation ctrl+alt+t for a terminal (can't reach it from menu) I try to launch caja and it gets ~$ caja
Could not register the application: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying

It works fine instead by giving sudo caja

Problem is still present with 2023-04-06 daily-live version.

Note that it does not occur with 'try Ubuntu Mate', but appears when Mate is installed.

Also the problem with the brisk menu can be got around by adding the compact menu to the panel, but this does not solve the problem of caja not working.

Is this completely fatal problem being worked on? Do the Mate developers even look at these bug reports? Other beta versions of Ubuntu (e.g. Lubuntu) seem to work and be usable.

While is is certainly true that Caja is not starting, I wonder if it is related to this comment (not Ubuntu):

https://www.reddit.com/r/voidlinux/comments/12ckmxm/started_having_an_issue_with_mate_this_morning/

In this case, the issue seems to be more Marco or mate-settings-daemon, but Caja still will not start. Using a different Window Manager seems to avoid it, and allows Caja to run normally.

We had a similar (or the same) issue in openSUSE Tumbleweed, removing a certain python library solved the problem: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1212962
