Thanks Pete for your comments. I don't observe this behaviour. In my case, it's closer to what the other bug reports have described: without Lightning the CRTL hot key works right off the bat for any type of emails (plain text, HTML, etc.) and without any delay.
However, as soon as the Lightning plug-in is switched on, this zoom feature disappears. After Lightning is switched off, it's back again. There is a bug, indeed. It's maybe not located in the Lightning code, however. Some developers have suggested it's located in Thunderbird (see Philipp Kewisch comments: "I have the feeling this may be a bug in the command controller code").
