I've experiences this same bug for several years on Windows, Linux, and OS X. I filed a bug report (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676452) because Thunderbird will freeze completely if you are using the mouse to move a message to a folder at the time that the authentication dialog pops up.

In the comments to the bug report, I documented that the prompt for the RSS password actually stopped appearing for a few months when I switched computers and Thunderbird versions.
