This is a commendable observation - and there is merit in fixes which help
address one's mail quota and local disk space.
In addition, as I point out in bug 293812 comment 0, if I were able to switch
between html and plain text, I could turn off the mail tooblar and recoup more
than 1/2 inch of screen real estate (perhaps 1 inch for some people).
In addition, it might eliminate the need for at least bugs 228562
