in the case of an environment set-up with dynamic routing (eg neutron-dynamic-routing publishing routes for each fIP), each fIP is published as a /32 route, so there is no gateway on the external network. It would be more relevant to let the user provide an IP (eg: to a DNS server outside the stack) and to ping that instead of the non existing gateway.
