Update: Putting this into /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/nonstandard_homedirs:

@{HOMEDIRS}+=/nonstandard/home/

Did not work. hello-world still fails claiming read-only filesystem (after writing to it successfully).

Exploring other workarounds. Can't bind mount to /home, because valid homedirs exist there already.
