Yes, I found a couple of older, unresolved bugs with the same workaround:
Moving wins to end of line in /etc/nsswitch.conf "fixed" problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/liferea/+bug/369274
However, moving wins after dns just disables wins, which then breaks samba.
Removing wins "fixed" the problem here, too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tk8.5/+bug/200397
Again, removing wins just breaks samba. The bug remains, either way.
