It happens to Android clients Pandoroid and Doom Box (largely Java translated from Pithos' Python) as well. This evening, as of a few hours ago, Pithos worked without issue, and then I started getting this message. Hitting "retry" worked after you got sent to another backend server, for a while. Now it doesn't work at all, it just comes back up after you hit "retry".
It is worth pointing out that Pianobar still works and in fact pushed out a new release a few days ago, so maybe they figured out / noticed something no one else did?
