OK, I got it Ovais, was just replying when I got your response here. My directory structure was slightly different than yours. I got it under Ubuntu 10.04.4 lucid using your my.cnf and a closer approximation of your directory structure. On initial inspection, Raghavendras analysis of the issue above is spot on. I will switch back to CentOS 6 (my preferred environment) and retry there, then continue on with the fix. Thanks for all the info.
