Also, it would be nice if the whole applet area can be used to change volume using the mousewheel. Since the applet expands itself, it becomes one of the larger sections of the panel; so, placing the pointer on the applet is way lot easier than placing it on an icon/button. This way, there is no need to place another control (icon/button/slider) on the panel for that functionality. And I mean every part of the applet, event when pointing on the seekbar. Volume changing is done much more frequently than song seeking.
