In addition to my last comment, you may need to set the correct permissions after installing the font. In a console type:

sudo chmod 655 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/symbol.ttf [press Enter]

Does anyone know, can we get this font included in the MS core TrueType fonts package to solve this problem once and for all?
