Netflix Desktop does not always install on first attempt

Could you please run "netflix-desktop --showdebug" and see what it says? In order to improve the framerate for some people all the debug output is normally disabled.

Ok, I have no idea why it does that sometimes - but everyone that's had this problem has been able to fix it by removing the profile and re-running netflixdesktop:
rm -Rf ~/.netflix-desktop
netflix-desktop

Please see if that fixes you problem.

Do you remember if you had any trouble with installing Mono or Gecko? It might be that the automated install of Mono/Gecko failing is what causes this problem.

every seemed smooth. if something failed in the first run it was silently.

Hmm, so far I've found no way to reproduce this issue. It's rather frustrating, as clearly several people have had this problem.

I had this same problem. I'm using 12.04. When I ran it for the first time, it installed Mono and Gecko. During the Gecko installation, I got an error dialog that said it was unable to create a path something like "%SystemDrive%\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults" because of "permission denied" or something (sorry I didn't take a screenshot). Retrying didn't work, so I clicked Cancel, and the installation seemed to complete, but when I ran netflix-desktop again, nothing happened. I wiped the profile directory and ran it again, and it installed everything without prompting me for Mono or Gecko, and it seems to work now.

Ok, I've released a fix for this that I _think_ will fix the problem. As it's difficult to reproduce I'm going to have to rely on new reports to confirm that that's the case. Feel free to reopen this bug if necessary.

I am running 12.10 32bit and keep getting an
 "E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"

 after I run the sudo apt-get update command.

I am running 12.04 64bit and I am experiencing the same error dwaynemac received earlier.

wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'

When running the gecko and mono installer, there was an error that did not resolve after multiple retries so I cancelled it. The rest of the installation seemed to run smoothly. However, nothing happens when I try to run the application. I have already tried removing it and reinstalling, but it still will not work.

Hi Justin, how did you try to remove it? You usually need to clear out the profile directory, on the newer versions you can do that like so:
rm -Rf ~/.wine-browser
I'll have to figure out why this problem is still occurring, but that should fix it for you.

I have the same issue when I run netflix-desktop --showdebug that gives error: wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'

Also when I attempt to open netflix desktop, a notification shows on the bottom panel but after that, it goes away and, nothing heppens.

I am workin on this laptop for someone else so, I do not have it with me at all times.

I haven't had time to work on this, for now the fix is to remove the corrupt profile:
rm -Rf ~/.wine-browser
After that just relaunch netflix-desktop.

I tried installing on Linux Mint 13 and encountered this bug. I'm not sure if the Gecko and Mono installations went correctly or not. However, I logged in as another user on the same system and everything worked smoothly. Netflix-desktop started, installed Gecko and Mono then started Firefox.

I logged out and logged in to the original user and encountered the same bug. I removed the ~/.netflix-desktop profile, and still the same bug.

I then removed the ~/.wine-browser profile and netflix-desktop launched with no errors. Hope this helps

I am installing under XBMCbuntu (Lubuntu 12.10). I am running into the same issues regarding "wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox." I tried removing the profile and relaunching netflix-desktop. During the installation of the extra files with Wine, I get a window that opens just saying "file is corrupt." The installation continues and finishes, but goes right back to not finding Firefox. I manually d/l and installed the Windows version of Firefox (whatever the latest is), to no avail. Any thoughts, or at least any idea what the corrupt file may be? I have not seen the other users here report that particular message.

Adam, would you mind launching netflix-desktop with the "--showdebug" option and see what it says in the terminal output? It may be that your bug is unrelated, but it's possible that it's the same thing. Which profile folder did you remove? Depending on when you started using the app the folder moved to ~/.wine-browser, so googling the answer to this might be telling you to remove the wrong folder.

In the meantime, for an unrelated reason, I had reloaded the entire OS, got back to the point where I was installing netflix-desktop, and got the same file is corrupt message. I opened up this page and set to running the --showdebug so that I could post the results here, and first ran the rm -RF /.wine-browser command. I then ran netflix-desktop --showdebug, and the installation completed without the message. I am able to successfully launch Netflix now. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the initial problem was - I had tried removing both the netflix profile as well as the wine-browser profile under my previous OS. In any case, it is working fine now. Thanks for the prompt response and support!

I am seeing this problem, but running "rm -Rf ~/.wine-browser" does not fix it.

$ netflix-desktop --showdebug

I'm sorry to post to this thread at such a late date, but it seems to apply to my attempts at installing this application. My system is an Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and I continue to be unable to successfully get netflix-desktop to work. After the initial install attempt, I noticed both that wine and gecko icons on the Launcher, but whenever I attempted to run the netflix-desktop, nothing happens.

Here is the output of the install AFTER I issued the following command: rm -RF ~/.wine-browser

Could you try deleting the profile directory (rm -Rf ${HOME}/.wine-browser) then running this:
WINEPREFIX="${HOME}/.wine-browser" /opt/wine-compholio/bin/wineboot --update

deleting the profile for wine browser worked for me too

The only issue I had when installing was the initial download it said something about the key not being present on the server but I just tried again and it went through and installed like the installation guide describes. Then it didnt open.

I did remove the netflix-desktop profile first then the wine browser and it reinstalled locally and worked properly

Still seeing this problem on 14.10. Removing ~/.wine-browser worked for me.
