Did you happen to backup your cnf files before the consequent re-installations? My best guess so far is that there was some peculiar configuration which got overridden after you re-installed... Not that a peculiar configuration is an excuse for a crash, but if it was the reason, it might be quite difficult to guess what caused the problem without seeing the config files.
