Also in the GUI (see attached screenshot). At this point, enough time has passed that the automatic sync has run (I can see this in the event log for the KVM host). I suspect that if I "Refresh" the KVM host in the GUI I will be able to compose a machine again.

Yes - now it works again. It appears that something in that automatic sync resets a critical variable.
