MAAS already can handle the "os" field in the simplestreams output. That field needs to be added to each product describing which operating system it is for. Currently the only operating system in the stream is "ubuntu" (which MAAS assumes if this field is missing). When "ubuntu-core" is placed in the stream it needs to set this field to "ubuntu-core" so MAAS can handle this new type of image.
