I have a problem with similar symptoms but it may or may not really be related. When I switch users I get Cinnamon crashes in the session that is not active. I've assumed it was either timing or low RAM related. My workstation is older and is maxed out at 8G RAM, and the memory leaks in Thunderbird and Firefox regularly suck most of that up, especially when I have 2 sessions logged in.

I upgraded from Mint 17.0 to 17.3 to see if this improved, but it not only got worse, but the Cinnamon crashes now leave multiple "[metacity] <defunct>" zombies, as above. I say it's worse because the background session's Cinnamon didn't *always* crash, just most of the time. Now it always crashes.

The good news is that restarting from "Cinnamon has crashed. Would you like to restart it or stay in Fallback mode" works, it's just annoying that it crashes in the first place.

I am not using any Java, so that's not it. But...Java is a memory hog, so possibly causing a low RAM condition that Cinnamon dislikes?
