I may add one observation. The behavior can (sometimes) be avoided when the original window did not touch the top edge. That is, if a window is placed that way and then closed, it will remember its geometry and not be maximized. This works for most of my windows, but not for thunderbird and perhaps others.

The behavior may therefore be related to the auto-maximizing at the top edge (which can be disabled using `gsettings set org.cinnamon.overrides edge-tiling false').
