I'd like to add my personal experience here, maybe it helps. I googled and found that seems to be necessary to setup usb-modeswitch for the stick to work.
However, When I plug in the stick now, syslog tells me that modeswitch claims to have switched the stick into modem mode, like:
Jun 11 17:37:55 rtfm kernel: [89219.604681] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22
Jun 11 17:37:55 rtfm kernel: [89219.747603] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Jun 11 17:37:58 rtfm kernel: [89222.480839] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, address 22
Jun 11 17:37:59 rtfm kernel: [89223.729534] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
Jun 11 17:37:59 rtfm kernel: [89223.729586] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
Jun 11 17:37:59 rtfm kernel: [89223.729758] USB Mass Storage support registered.
Jun 11 17:38:03 rtfm kernel: [89227.356076] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 23
Jun 11 17:38:03 rtfm kernel: [89227.499669] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Jun 11 17:38:03 rtfm kernel: [89227.522872] usb-storage: device found at 23
However, as you can see, directly after reconfiguring the device is beind reconnected and re-detected as mass storage and pops up the inevitable drive icon instead of being listet by network-manager.
If you need any more logs, please tell me so and I will glady provide any info you request.
