I had experienced a similar issue in Linux Mint 17.1
But I did have pulseaudio
It turned out that the cause was lack of 'libasound.so' (even though 'libasound.so.2' and 'libasound.so.2.0.0' were in place)
I've installed 'libasound2-dev' and this has helped
