I have this problem too, but the problem isn't really in gimp, it's in gphoto2 (or possibly deeper, in the USB stack). This will get you some diagnostics:
gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile=gphoto.log -L
You may need to install gphoto2 first:
sudo apt-get install gphoto2
