I used the Sliding Doors technique plus some tweaks to fix this problem. Check out the attached zip for files.

HTML changes:
- moved #applicationchooser out of #mainarea
- added a bit of javascript to handle tab rollovers

CSS changes:
- removed all #applicationchooser styles from the original css file
- all css changes are in style-tabs.css

Image changes:
- I had to crop 3 background images to reduce whitespace.

I hope this solves the problem.
