Raptor Ramjet (ramjet) wrote : Launchpads error reporting is crap

I have just tried to report an error with xorg in launchpad.

However I had typed "Xorg" as the package name instead of "xorg" and when I tried to send the page I was given a meaningless message at the top of the page telling me that "There is 1 error". There was no clue whatsoever what the error was or how I should fix it.

Please make sure that all errors are displayed with a meaningful text telling __EXACTLY__ what the source of the error is.

Sadly there are far, far too many instances of errors being reported such as "Error file is missing" instead of something useful like "Error '/home/user/inputfile' is missing". It should be an Ubuntu standard that anything that reports an error (i.e. a desktop program, an official Ubuntu website etc.) should report the full context of the error including such things as the name of the object that is at fault or the exact nature of the condition that has caused the error.

If you're not going to do this you might as well adopt the Atari STFM error reporting paradigm in which a dialogue box would pop up to tell the user "Something strange has happened in your computer, please try to avoid" (I'm paraphrasing here but this is near enough the exact text). Mildly amusing, the first hundred times at least, but about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Thank you.
