Yeah, the behaviour here could improve. libavoid will eventually allow user-specified bendpoints in connectors. This will go some way towards what you want, Also I need to make it more easy to turn a connector into a path, that is, a nice way of removing the XML attribute that bulia mentions. Marking as wishlist.
