Yes, there seems to be consensus that the most desirable feature would be the ability to 'export selection' to PDF. I'll update the bug title to reflect this. Can I ask how would you want this to interact with the current document's page size? I can think of a couple ways this could work:
1) the document's page size is ignored, and the output PDF is tightly cropped to the selection, even if they are off the page. This would be equivalent to calling 'resize page to selection' right before the export.
2) the page size of the output PDF is specified by the document's page size, but only the selected objects are included in the file. If the selection is off the page, they are invisible. (Unless you use Sumatra, apparently :) )
